Together for a better world for all of us
The United Nations on their General Assembly on October 14th 1992 declared the date of December 3rd for International Day of Persons with Disabilities. On December 3rd, all over the world, especially in Member States of United Nations, this day is celebrated. With increasing of world’s population, according to the data of World Health Organization, the number of people with disabilities is constantly growing
Marking the December 3rd – International Day of Persons With Disabilities for its aim has a promotion of understanding disability issues, the rights of people with disabilities and benefits which the society can have from integration of this population in all areas of political, social, economic and cultural life of the community. This day provides the possibility to intensify activities in order to achieve full participation of persons with disabilities and equal treatment of their rights in society.
The theme of this year International Day of Persons With Disabilities, as defined by United Nations, is “Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development.”
Persons with disabilities are disadvantaged in society and confronted with stigma and discrimination. They stay marginalized, disproportionately poor and often unemployed. Furthermore, persons with disabilities are excluded from social and political processes and without a vote in matters concerning them and their society.
In his message on the occasion of International Day of Persons With Disabilities, United Nations Secretary- General, Ban Ki-moon, among other things, says: “This year’s Day of Persons With Disabilities reminds us that development only could be sustainable, if it is equitable, inclusive and accessible to all. Persons with disabilities have to be included in all phases of developing process from the beginning to monitoring and evaluation
Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon, besides that, urges the Governments, civil society and community to work for and together with persons with disabilities to achieve an inclusive, sustainable and equitable development all over the world
However, even it has been on the international, and also national level achieved certain progress in including disability and persons with disabilities, the gap between policies and practice still exists.
Therefore, we challenge the Government, and whole society, to accept this call and put forth the effort aiming the improvement of status of this category of citizens. In addition, we are challenging the Government to undertake activities to eliminate discrimination, as well as architectural barriers which are most obvious manifestation of discrimination that persons with disabilities face with.
